Toyota accused of misleading public over recalls

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

Toyota has been accused by a U.S. House of Representatives committee with misleading the public and investigators over its recent recalls.

The accusations, in a statement from the House Energy and Commerce Committee, claim that Toyota both relied on a flawed study in its assessment of the issue of sticking accelerator pedals at the heart of the recalls, and then made misleading statements about its response. According to the authors of the letter, Henry Waxman and Bart Stupak, Toyota dismissed, rather than investigated, the idea that the cars’ computers were at fault. In a statement, James Lentz, the president of Toyota’s American division, claimed that hardware issues were to blame, and that dealers were repairing the faulty part. Toyota also released a study commissioned from the research firm Exponent that said electronic systems were not to blame.

According to the House committee, however, the study involved only six vehicles, none of which had problems with their electrical systems, and was insufficient to produce an accurate result. “Our preliminary assessment is that Toyota resisted the possibility that electronic defects could cause safety concerns, relied on a flawed engineering report and made misleading public statements concerning the adequacy of recent recalls to address the risk of sudden unintended acceleration.”

The company is under a criminal investigation, and has received two subpoenas for documents from two House committees relating to the recalls, although whether they are directly related to the letter is unclear. The documents are related to accelerator issues in several models, as well as brake problems with the Prius hybrid car, and were served earlier in in February by a federal grand jury and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Toyota has released upwards of 75,000 pages of documents under the requests.

In a separate, though related, development, it has emerged that Toyota last year negotiated a limited recall for two models, the Toyota Camry and Lexus ES, that were affected by the accelerator recalls, saving the company an estimated $100 million. A confidential internal presentation in July 2009 made the claim, and a month later, a Lexus ES, one of the models under the limited recall crashed in California, killing four people. The claims apparently referenced a September, 2007 recall of floor mats that could trap gas pedals, the same problem that triggered a full recall of numerous Toyota cars to fix the same problem. In the same presentation, the company claimed to have avoided recalls of another model related to rust, as well as delaying new federal safety regulations.

Chess Aptitude Test: How Do You Score?

Submitted by: Chad Kimball

Jonathan Levitt, a GM with a lot of chess experience under his belt, created what I believe is one of the most effective and simple, “self-tests” to determine chess aptitude. This test is discussed in his book, “Genius in Chess.”

To take the test, you first need to know how to understand the diagram of a chessboard in algebraic notation. If you are an experienced chess player who is familiar with chess notation, you can skip this paragraph and move to the paragraph where I describe the test. In algebraic chess notation, each row of the chess board is assigned a number from 1 to 8, beginning with the white side. Each column is described with a letter from a to h, going from left to right from the white side. Each square is described by a letter/number combination according to the intersection of the column and row that both contain that square. The lowermost square, farthest to the left is h8. (If you are sitting on the “white’s” side of the board). As you will see from the diagram on my website that I mentioned above, the uppermost square, farthest to the right a1.

I’ve posted a visual diagram of a chess board illustrating the algebraic notation method on my chess game strategies site http://www.chessvictory.com. Scroll to the bottom, and click on the resources link to access the diagram.

Now allow me to describe the test:

This test requires some sort of timer or clock, a chessboard, one white knight, and one black queen.

Place the white knight on square b1. Place the black queen on square d4. The knight has to move all the way around the board, visiting the following squares in this order: c1, e1, f1, h1, a2, c2, e2, g2, h2, and so on until you reach g8 (you won’t be able to visit h8 because it is controlled by the black queen). During the test you cannot take the black queen, and you cannot put the knight en prise at any point.

It is acceptable to visit the squares in the list out of order, but only if you are using them to get from c1 to e1, for example. However, these squares must be visited again at the correct time in the order listed above. Only do the test once, and time yourself. Anyone who can complete the test in ten minutes or less on their first try reveals, according to Levitt, “real chess talent.”

This test may seem simple at first glance, but it will surely require intense concentration, a spacial knowledge of the chess board, and the will to keep going. Some people even give up after the first stage, because it takes nine steps.

If you go to my chess tactics site http://www.chessvictory.com, scroll to the bottom, and click on the resources link, you can access the solution to this test, as well as results, in seconds, of some very accomplished chess players. Michael Adams, a world title contender, took 330 seconds (5.5 minutes). Many other GMs in the list required up to seven.”

Take a break from your computer and try it!

If it takes you longer than 10 minutes, don’t despair… this test requires that you are able to think strategically about the chess board, not simply memorize moves.

Most people who simply memorize moves, but don’t understand chess strategy, will have trouble with the test. Strategic thinking (not simply memorizing moves and tactics) essential to REAL chess aptitude. Spacial aptitude is also quality that this test requires. Both of these skills are learned from experience on the chess board, good coaching, and consistent study.

Thousands gather in London to protest against government cuts

Monday, March 28, 2011

File:2011 UK protests.jpg

Hundreds of thousands of people joined marches in London on Saturday against public sector cuts by the British government. One union estimated up to half a million people travelled from across the country to demonstrate as the Conservative–Liberal Democrat coalition implements wide-ranging spending cuts.

According to reports, a small group of protesters dressed in black threw paint and smoke bombs at the Oxford Street branch of Topshop, and demonstrators in Piccadilly threw smoke bombs at the Ritz Hotel. The protests have targeted the government and a number of retail outlets, following on from the UK Uncut campaign which has demonstrated outside retailers including Vodafone and Topshop to raise awareness of alleged tax system abuses by the businesses.

The violence came to a head on Sunday as police stormed Trafalgar Square and the protesters ran, throwing bricks and bottles at riot officers. “I have never seen such a fast escalation of violence in my life,” one witness to the violence in the square said. “Everything just kicked off, glass everywhere, police hitting people, people being dragged across the floor. I just can’t believe it.” Clashes in the square finally ended in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The protesters grabbed metal barriers and hurled them over police lines, using them as battering rams.

Senior members of the TUC, the federation of 88 of the country’s unions, were quick to dissociate the disruptive actions of the “few hundred” with those of the earlier peaceful protest, claiming that the violence of a minority should not detract from the message behind the main march.

The Labour Party leader, Ed Miliband, addressed hundreds of thousands of peaceful marchers assembled in Hyde Park, and attacked the planned spending cuts. “Our struggle is to fight to preserve, protect and defend the best of the services we cherish because they represent the best of the country we love,” he said.

The Metropolitan Police said approximately 4,500 officers were policing the event, and 214 demonstrators were detained. On Twitter, the force reported two significant incidents of violence and that four police officers have been injured; one is being treated in hospital. They also said protesters had thrown light bulbs filled with ammonia at officers on Oxford Street.

Small protests have been ongoing in the U.K. since early this month, mainly in the northern city of Sheffield. In the biggest of these, 5,000 people attended a protest march on March 12 in Sheffield, with demonstrators marching from Devonshire Green, an open space in the city centre, to the venue of the Liberal Democrat spring conference. Barricades were set up after “violent incidents”, though only one arrest was made.

Danish Integration Minister’s car burned

Wednesday, June 8, 2005

Copenhagen, Denmark – The Danish Integration Minister Rikke Hvilshøj’s car was set ablaze outside her family-home on the morning of Wednesday 8 June. From there, the fire spread to the family’s garage, and further on to the side of the house, damaging the roof above the kitchen and children’s room.

At the same time, an e-mail was sent to several media agencies, where a group calling themselves “Action Group Beate” claimed responsibility, saying it is a “protest against the racist immigrational laws of Denmark”. The police found the computer used for sending the mail within a few hours, and closed down the cybercafé whilst removing the computer.

Throughout the Danish political system politicians from both the ruling party and the opposition have expressed their outrage over the terrorism.

The insurance company is currently assessing the amount of damage done to the home, but so far they have made an estimate of £27.000, just for the house damages.

Rating Digital Hearing Aids, What Do The Users Say

By David Faulkner

The wide scale advent of science & technology has opened an array of possibilities in every field, the hearing device market also shown the signs in the form of a wide range of products offered to the customer. A customer in such a market finds himself/herself exposed to a decision making process, based on the price and type of the device available and the one he/she wants. The most important parameter in this decision making process is the degree of auditory impairedness and obviously the budget at hand. Even though if one is decided upon these factors, he/she still faces an array to decision to be made. He feels a need of some users rating digital hearing aids.

Analog Or Digital? Rating Digital Hearing Aids:

The first and foremost decision to make is to choose the category of hearing aid. The two choices are digital or analog. Analog is what started this market, whereas digital is where the scientific innovation has brought it. Rating digital hearing aids vis–vis analog ones, a vigilant customer goes for the novel technology.

Rating Digital Hearing Aids, The Customer Response:

When rating digital hearing aids, customer contentment runs high as compared to the other options available in the market. These customers rating digital hearing aids say that they found lesser noise distortion and efficient sound magnification as compared to their analog counterparts. This advantage was seen even on the programmable analog devices. The customer response regarding rating digital hearing aids may make one to conclude these being the best choice, but in this choice the other factor, i.e. cost no longer remains in the very affordable range, as along with customers rating digital hearing aids as high, the costs for these also run high as compared to their analog counterparts. The medical insurances and Medicare normally do not reimburse the money for such devices, so it is the customer who pays for it. Nonetheless taking the users rating digital hearing aids saying the absolute truth, they are worth the money!. The Trust Worthy Names:

Having had passed though the first two decisions, i.e. the category of the hearing device and the price, one again faces the decision of choosing the mark i.e. the best company. As before, here too one has to rely on the users rating digital hearing aids. The market has a range of competitive sellers, thus assuring some really good quality products. Some leading names in this range are Siemens, Starkey, Oticon, Phonak, Beltone and Resound. A very brief overview of each of these goes as:

Siemens:

Assures that it has the right choice for everyone, no matter what the category be. Siemens is the leader in the hearing device market.

Starkey:

Among the top ranking companies which make available to many people over the world who cannot afford expensives ones.

Oticon:

Lists among the oldest companies in this trade.

Phonak:

Endeavors to remain on the break through in the hearing aid technology.

Beltone and Resound are also among the renowned companies providing efficient and reliable hearing devices. A customer buying his/her auditory instrument from one of these top-ranking companies from users rating digital hearing aids, actually buys his ease of use and comfort at a reasonable price.

A compilation of brief news reports for Sunday, December 7, 2008.

Officials say that progress is being made in a deal to bail out three United States carmakers. The U.S. government will be holding weekend talks on the plan after two days of Congressional hearings.

Dana Perino, the White House press secretary, stated that discussions with both parties had been “constructive”.

Executives from the three companies – General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler – have pleaded before two Congressional committees, asking for $34 billion in order to stop collapse.

“I’m convinced that by Sunday we will have an agreement that people can understand on this bill,” said Barney Frank, a representative from the state of Massachusetts.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, said that Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe must be forced out of office and face trial for his crimes against humanity.

“The time has come for Robert Mugabe to answer for his crimes against humanity, against his countrymen and women and for justice to be done. The winds of change that once brought hope to Zimbabwe and its neighbours have become a hurricane of destruction, with the outbreak of cholera, destitution, starvation and systemic abuse of power by the state,” said Sentamu.

Sentamu that the power-sharing deal that was signed by Mugabe and the Zimbabwean opposition in September was “now dead”.

Dr Sentamu’s statement comes after a severe cholera outbreak spread in Zimbabwe, and saw 12,545 cases reported and 565 people dead.

Cheap Pellet Stoves}

Cheap Pellet Stoves

by

Sam StruebelLately, quite a few visitors have arrived at the web site by using the search phrase cheap pellet stove”. There aren’t any articles to help you find a cheap pellet stove, so I shopped around and came up with these suggestions for inexpensive, quality built stoves from reputable manufacturers.

The first stove that comes to mind is the PelPro model HHPP2BD wood pellet stove. This unadorned stove, known alternately as Cheap Charlie” and Franklin 120 Home Heater” has a 120 lb hopper capacity and generates 15,000 50,000 btu’s per hour; enough heat for 800 2000 sq.ft.

This popular stove can be purchased online at Homeclick for $1802.95, shipping included. However, you can purchase the same stove for $1499 by visiting an Aubuchon Hardware store in person. Further savings can be realized if you purchase your stove in a state with no sales tax, such as New Hampshire.

How you pay for your stove is equally important as how much you pay. If you finance the purchase of your stove with a credit card, the money you saved by being a savvy shopper will be spent on credit card interest.

The best time to buy a wood pellet or corn stove is during the summer when everyone else is looking for air conditioners. There’s no reason you can’t bargain with the salesman just as you would when buying a car.

However, if you wait until January, when demand is high, you won’t be in a position to bargain. It’s hard to bargain when there’s nothing left to buy.

Likewise, you should be finalizing your wood pellet or corn fuel purchases no later than September. Considering the combined corn harvest of Canada and the United States, you would think there was corn to burn. The problem is – corn to burn can’t have more than 15% moisture. This requirement eliminates most corn as fuel, and adds a hefty premium to dry corn” once winter settles in and demand is peaking.

Another cheap pellet stove is the United States Stove model #6039 multifuel stove. A multifuel stove offers the versatility of burning either corn or wood pellets, whichever is cheaper.

At usstove.com, the model #6039 multifuel stove is selling for $2200. Going back to Aubuchon Hardware, it’s $1799.99. And if we do just a little more shopping around, we can find the exact same stove on sale for a limited time at Orscheln Farm and Home for only $1599.

One more cheap pellet stove worth looking at is the Breckwell Big-E Utility pellet stove. This 50,000 btu stove heats 2,000 sq. ft. and comes equipped with high priced stove features such as automatic ignition and a large 140 lb. hopper for $1549.

While I was doing the research for this article, I came across some reviews for the Big-E stove. The only common complaint was keeping the window free of soot.

If this was the only problem, I wanted to know if the reviewers were still enthusiastic about their Big-E stoves. I sent out some emails, and the next day two of the original reviewers were kind enough to respond.

M. T., from Belchertown, MA., gives some excellent advice to first time stove buyers.

Sam:

Yes you can use my comments. I swear by this stove, one of the best investments I have ever made. I burn almost 3 ton a year in my 1400 sq ft ranch with a temp of about 75-78 degrees in the living area and 70 in the bedrooms.

It runs just like a furnace. I have it on a milli-volt thermostat that can be set to different temps 4 times a day. It turns on and off on its own to satisfy the thermostat. It just does its own thing and keeps us toasty. The hopper is also big enough that I don’t have to feed it daily.

Breckwell is very fast to respond. I called Breckwell last week to order some combustion gaskets, They picked up the phone on the 2nd ring and I had my gaskets in a few days.

One last note, people need to do plenty of research on who they buy the stove from online. I did a lot of research on the type of stove to get, I didn’t do a lot of research on the online store. That is my only regret.”

From Tipton, Indiana, W.F. had this to say about the Big-E.

Hi,

No, I don’t mind if you use the info, that’s what it’s there for, to help others. As for further comments, I would just say that installation is pretty simple, the stove is very reliable so far, and that the only hassle is the same as with any other, Clean up. Ugh.”Finding a cheap pellet stove to warm your home is easy with these tips for success: Know how much you can afford. Be on the look out for a sale. Know who you’re buying from. Pay cash or find a dealer that offers 90 days same as cash. Buy lots of Windex.Find your cheap pellet stove at Alternative-Heating-Info.com
