Woman fined in Spain under new ‘Gag Law’

Monday, August 17, 2015

A woman in Spain has been fined €800 after posting a photograph to her Facebook account of a police vehicle parked in space reserved for disabled/handicapped drivers. She was located and fined within two days of posting the photograph. The incident has now gained international attention.

The woman, who has not been named, saw the police vehicle parked in a reserved spot in Petrer and snapped a photo. She posted the photo with the caption: “Park where you bloody well please and you won’t even be fined.” ((es))Spanish Language: ?Aparcas donde te sale de los cojones y encima no te multan…

Fernando Portillo, a local police spokesperson, told local media the vehicle was parked there because police were responding to an emergency. After the story was reported on a local news website, it began to be reported internationally.

On July 1, the “Citizens’ Security law” went into effect. The law was written in response to violent protests. Even before its enactment it saw widespread criticism. It was dubbed the “gag law” ((es))Spanish language: ?ley mordaza or the “gagging law”. The law prohibits “the unauthorized use of images of police officers that might jeopardize their or their family’s safety or that of protected facilities or police operations” ((es))Spanish language: ?El uso no autorizado de imágenes o datos personales o profesionales de autoridades o miembros de las Fuerzas y Cuerpos de Seguridad que pueda poner en peligro la seguridad personal o familiar de los agentes, de las instalaciones protegidas o en riesgo el éxito de una operación.

Judge Joaquim Bosch, Judges for Democracy spokesperson, said: “It is not a law for citizens’ security, but a law for the government to avoid citizens’ protests. All opinion polls indicate that the Spanish society is not at all preoccupied by security but by the economic situation and political corruption.”

Amnesty International condemned the law in a report: “With threats of fines or threats of being beaten, the government is trying to stigmatize and criminalize people who are just practicing their rights.” Virginia Álvarez, who wrote the report, noted, “instead of listening to their demands, instead of starting a dialogue, authorities are doing everything they can to impede people from protesting”.

The part of the law which prohibits “the unauthorized use of images of police officers that might jeopardize their or their family’s safety” is cited as the reason for the fine, however, police spokesperson Fernando Portillo said it was up to police officers involved and under the new law they could do this. “We would have preferred a different solution but they have the legal right to impose the fine,” Portillo said, but the public posting of the photo impugned the officers’ sense of honor.

The Power Of Low Negatives For Your Online Business

Submitted by: Scott Lindsay

There is a political strategy that has been used successfully for several years now. The idea is to support and push for candidates with low negatives.

This philosophy tends to suggest that a winning candidate may not have the overall highest degree of positives, but they absolutely must have low negatives.

If a skeleton is found in the closet by the news media this is a negative and will be heavily reported on in most cases. Since it is normal for the media to fixate on bad or negative news it stands to reason that negative press will gain the most coverage and result in a fluctuating opinion of the candidate.

While everyone was pushing for a very positive candidate at one time the new trend is to get behind someone who has a background with few potential negative reports.

The same is true with your Internet business and subsequent marketing. You want to make sure that above all else there are very few downsides to the product or service you are marketing.

By all means accentuate the positive. After all it is your website so hit the high points at will. Just make sure that you back products you truly believe have low negatives or have been adequately proven to have very little downside.

If you have a customer who discovers a flaw in your product and you don t want to address the issue that individual can spread word quickly via the web and through consumer oriented feedback sites.

Let me be clear, your product doesn t have to be the absolute best product ever produced, but it does need to do what you say it will do. Negative press can adversely affect your business.

If you can present your business with the aim of satisfying 80% of your consumers while not leaving a bad taste in the proverbial mouths of the other 20% then you can likely experience continued growth and customer support. Once negatives get beyond 20% they start causing your business problems.

For instance if you have a product that you feel could benefit from marketing the link between the product and a reduction in carbon output then you would likely benefit from this marketing strategy. If, however, you have a sense that this may be viewed as controversial then you can decrease potential negatives by not making this issue a cornerstone of your marketing plan.

We ve all encountered products that are pushed heavily. The product seems to be flying off the shelf, but the business is abandoned in a short period of time. The reason is often due to known deficits in the product and the business owner just wanted to dump and run – get rid of the product before the consumer figures out it wasn t worth it.

If you want to be in business online for the long-term you may want to consider choosing products with low negatives. The idea is to find and sell products that people have a heard time saying anything bad about.

When you devise a marketing plan based around controversy you intentionally polarize your client base and force yourself into a niche market. That market could be lucrative, but it could also be a frustrating disappointment if you should alienate otherwise willing buyers.

2007 Taipei Samsung Running Festival: A combination with charity, technology, and sports

Sunday, October 14, 2007

With the success of the Samsung Running Festival from 2005 in Taipei, and continued with the image of charity, Samsung Electronics donated 100 PDA phones to Chinese National Association of the Deaf, R.O.C., Taiwan. (CNAD) and CNAD elected “Taiwan Top 10 Outstanding Deaf Occupational Excellence” delegates to receive this donation in the 3rd Taipei Samsung Running Festival.

“Earlier in 2006, Samsung donated lots of funds to help the process of 2009 Summer Deaflympics in Taipei. In this meaningful activity, I’m appreciated with the donation from Samsung who helped lots of deaf people in Taiwan with a good enterprise image. I hope Samsung can still promote the charity in Taiwan.” Jiong-huang Yang (Chairman of CNAD) said at the Donation Ceremony.

“Based on a concern with an enterprise of ‘What’s taken from the people is used for the people’, Samsung imported this running activity and donated with charity activity in Taiwan. I hope this event will close on people in Taiwan.” Kuen-Hee Park (Greater China Area Chairman of Samsung Eletronics) remarked at Opening Ceremony.

Nearly the start at 7:00 a.m. (Taipei Time), more than 30,000 runners were ready to start. To prevent the starting and route problem, the organizer Chinese Taipei Road Running Association set up the controlling line at the start line and it took a good effect with the start controlling.

After the running activity, Samsung Electronics held lots of performances such as kids’ street dancing, taekwondo skills by Taipei Physical Education College, CTITV Live Contest of “Ape Show” Program, and a small concert of CTV “One Million Star” entertainers. And National Palace Museum also invited runners visiting the NPM with dressing official “Taipei Samsung Running Festival” T-shirt after all the programs ended.

Issues Many People Do Not Know About Auto Insurance

By Adriana J. Noton

Auto insurance is not an option if one is planning to own and operate a licensed vehicle. However, it is a broad field that can be confusing especially to first timers. Some people also believe that they just need to locate the provider then buy whatever cover the agent recommends. This is not the best way although some people just get lucky.

If you believe that matters related to auto insurance quotes are too complicated, you should change your attitude and put a little effort then you will see what you have been missing. What you should realize is that stakeholders in the industry, from the auto insurance company to the agents, want to make more profits. So if you just rely on their advice, you create a great channel for them to make that extra profit.

Some of the issues you must know before approaching any provider include the policies regarding replacement and repair costs, actual and agreed value as well as depreciation. These vary from company to company, so you must evaluate a number to find out which suits you best. Some companies do not seem to care about the physical condition of the vehicle or upgrades you have made doing valuation after an accident.

Another interesting thing you must understand is depreciation. Although different techniques are used to arrive at the final figure, it is important to note that the manufacture date is the main determinant. Other factors, which are also considered, include the odometer reading, the exterior and interior condition of the vehicle. You might be wondering why you need this. However, if you expect to pay the right amount, you must know the exact value of your vehicle after a given period.

So far we have considered factors rarely addressed. However, this does not mean that one should not consider other issues. For instance, you must learn how to get the best provider in the market. Currently, one of the best ways to do this is by getting online auto insurance quotes to help you find out the best company.

With different quotes, you can compare different things like premium rates, types of coverage and the terms of service. In addition to the different quotes, it is also a good idea to read reviews or use other rating systems available online. Such resources can help you find out which companies are rated best based on the experiences of other people.

Before settling for any provider, it is advisable to review the local laws. This will help you understand the minimum coverage required. This will help you especially if you are looking for the cheapest auto insurance cover. This is because you can opt for something barely above the minimum requirement.

From these points it is clear that there is more to auto insurance than visiting the local agent for a quote. Once you have a clear understanding of these factors, you will enjoy the best rates possible. The knowledge is also indispensable in case you are filing a claim.

Vestas protesters sacked with immediate effect

Thursday, July 30, 2009

Eleven of the 25 workers at the Vestas factory in Newport, Isle of Wight, England who have been carrying out a sit-in since Monday July 20 have been sacked with immediate effect.

According to one of the protesters known as “Mike”, the occupiers were given their dismissal notices concealed under slices of their evening meal of pizza. The company said that the protesters have had ample opportunity to air their point of view, and had no choice but to sack eleven of the twenty five workers that they had positively identified; and that given that the fact that the action constituted a “fundamental breach” of trust, that the eleven would not be entitled to redundancy packages. A press release from the company said that Vestas “saw no other choice than to dismiss the 11 employees, who the company has positively identified as the employees currently participating in the occupation of the factory.”

The protesters remained upbeat, vowing to continue their occupation and have called upon the UK government to save the 625 jobs and to nationalise the Danish owned factory. Occupier Ian Terry told the BBC that if the occupiers are forced out, they plan to leave the building “peacefully”.

Vestas management were dealt a setback today in ending the occupation as Newport County Court ruled that the papers accusing the occupiers of aggravate trespass and requiring they surrender the office they occupy by July 29 were improperly served. The case has been adjourned until Tuesday August 4. In court, Judge Graham White said he was “distinctly uncomfortable” with what he perceived as Vestas’ effort to “get around the rules” in retaking the factory from the occupiers.

Legal representation for the Vestas workers had been offered by Bob Crow, secretary of the RMT trade union. Crow has pledged the “full solidarity” of the RMT and seven other unions with the workers occupying the plant.

Vestas management has also been providing the occupiers with hot meals in an apparent response to Crow’s announcement, made on July 24, that the RMT was planning on airlifting food into the factory by helicopter. Crow is meeting today with Ed Miliband, the Environment Minister.

Earlier in the week, Miliband pledged £6 million in funding to an expansion of Vestas’ Isle of Wight research and development centre, which currently employs 110 workers and could, said the Minister, be expanded to employ 40 more.

Rallies continued throughout the week in support of the Vestas occupiers. Since the occupation began, the Vestas workers have received declarations of support and solidarity from a wide swathe of the British left, including but not limited to: political parties Green Party, Respect, the Socialist Party, the Socialist Workers Party, the Alliance for Workers Liberty, and the Communist Party of Britain; the TUCG group, which brings together the BFAWU, FBU, NAPO, NUJ, PCS, POA, RMT, and URTU; and environmental groups Greenpeace, the Campaign against Climate Change, Climate Camp, and Workers’ Climate Action, who claims credit for initiating the campaign to occupy the factory. Attendees of the Big Green Gathering, a large annual environmentalist rally which was due to take place starting today but was suddenly canceled on Sunday, are being encouraged to go to the Isle of Wight and take part in support rallies for Vestas instead.

Speaking to Wikinews about the “redgreen” coalition supporting the occupation, a spokesman for the Alliance for Workers’ Liberty said: “We think this struggle is important on at least three grounds — it is central to the struggle for jobs, it is central to the struggle for the environment, and it is central to the struggle for rebuilding the labour movement.”

Photographs shared with Wikinews by the occupiers show the occupiers, mostly young men, talking, carrying out everyday tasks, and keeping in touch with the outside world via mobile phones. The use of mobile telephones in the Vestas occupation has given the press remarkable access to the occupiers and provided an effective platform for relaying their demands and feelings to the media. In contrast, Vestas’s designated media contact for the United Kingdom is on vacation. Attempts to reach Vestas Newport factory manager Patrick Weir, whom a Vestas representative at the company’s Danish headquarters stated was handling press inquiries regarding the occupation, received no reply.

Vestas plans to close the factory on July 31, citing the difficulties of obtaining planning permission for wind farms in the United Kingdom. All blades manufactured at Vestas’ Newport plant are sent to the United States. 1900 employees of the company in Northern Europe face job losses, 625 of them in Vestas’s plants in the south of England.

Iranian International Master Dorsa Derakhshani discusses her chess career with Wikinews

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Dorsa Derakhshani was banned since she did not wear a hijab, an Islamic headscarf, while competing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival in January 2017. Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????. He further stated, “Unfortunately, something that should not have happened has happened and our national interest is paramount and we have reported this position to the Ministry of Sports.” ((fa))Farsi language: ????????? ?????? ?? ????? ????????? ?????? ??? ? ????? ??? ?? ?? ?? ???? ?????? ???? ? ?? ??? ???? ?? ?? ????? ???? ?? ????? ?????.

IM Dorsa Derakhshani, who currently studies at Saint Louis University in the United States and plays for the United States Chess Federation, discussed her chess career, time in Iran and the 2017 controversy, and her life in Saint Louis with a Wikinews correspondent.

Richard Hammond injured in jet-powered car crash

Wednesday, September 20, 2006

Richard Hammond, a British television presenter known for presenting shows such as Top Gear and Brainiac, is in a “stable” condition in hospital following a car accident during filming for Top Gear. He was injured when the jet-powered car he was driving crashed during filming for the former. The car, similar to the “Vampire” which holds the British land speed record, overturned whilst being driven at speeds of up to 300 miles per hour at Elvington airfield near York, in what was suggested to be an attempt at bettering the previous record. It has been suggested that he succeeded in a previous attempt. Emergency services were called to the scene at 5.45pm local time (16.45 UTC).

He was airlifted to the specialist neurological unit at Leeds General Infirmary. A former firefighter who was providing fire safety at the site and witnessed the accident said that Hammond was initially unconscious but able to speak when removed from the wreckage. At the time he indicated some pain in his lower back. Numerous eyewitnesses from the Top Gear crew claimed he was ‘helped into’ an air ambulance, suggesting he was conscious at the time. The ambulance service is reported to have said that Hammond was unconscious when they arrived at the scene, but began to regain consciousness upon arrival at the hospital.

The car was “very very badly damaged and in many pieces on the runway”, according to BBC News 24, reporting comments made by his colleagues.

A web sitehas been set up for well-wishers enabling them to donate to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. This site will accept donations until January 21, 2007. As of 23.09 (UTC) 21st September 2006 (day 2) £52,239.90 had been raised, surpassing the original target of £340.00 and well past their target of £51,000 (150 flights) that was set in the past few days.

How Your Life Can Be A Dream Success Strategies

Submitted by: Robert Worstell

A lot of people – probably most of us – have at some point dreamed of being especially outstanding. Fantasies of being the star player on a team, or the homecoming queen, or fantastically rich – all these abound. Some simply want to be successful and have happy relationships.

With all these big dreams and lofty aspirations, it’s unfortunate that our dreams can remain just that – dreams. All these personal ideals might as well be stored in the attic, gathering dust.

Don’t get your hopes up.

Did you ever think that life could actually be much better if only we learned to convert these dreams to responsible action?

Of course, the first stumbling block to achieving any goal is to believe in that lie called “Impossible.” There are a lot of phrases like that: “I can’t do this.” or “It’s too hard.” “It’s too unrealistic.” “No one can do this.”

Of course, if everyone thought that way, there would probably never have been any inventions, discoveries, or breakthroughs which make up the list of human accomplishments.

Remember that scientists were baffled when they took a look at the humble bumblebee. Theoretically, they said, it was impossible for the bumblebee to fly. Unfortunately for the bumble, bee no one has told it so. So fly it does.

The real self-imposed limit is where people suffer from dreaming outrageous dreams and then never act on them. The result is what we’ve seen above – broken dreams and bored lives in front of TV sets.

If you limit yourself with self-doubt, and self-limiting assumptions, you will never be able to break past what you may deem impossible. If you reach too far out into the sky without taking any real action towards your goal, you will find yourself clinging on to the impossible dream.

You can try this exercise. On a sheet of paper, write down a goal you’d like to achieve. Now under that, make three headers – Things you know you can do; Things you might be able to do; and Things which are impossible to do.

Now work out the steps you can see right now that would help you achieve that goal. Put them under each header according to how hard you think they are to attain or achieve.

Now every day, review that goal statement and see that dream in your mind again. Then, look over that list under “Things you know you can do” and get some of those done that day. And look over “Things you might be able to do” and see if you can get some of those done somehow.

As of the items you wrote under things I could do are accomplished, you can move the goals that are under things that are impossible for you to do to the list of things you might be able to do.

Moving through this process, you may find that the goals you once considered impossible are now far more realistic and doable. The impossible has begun to look possible.

You see, the technique here is not to limit your imagination. It is to aim high, and start working towards that goal little by little. However, it also is unwise to set a goal that is truly unrealistic. Break that star-high goal into little tiny steps which you can do right now. As you get these done, then you’ll find that the ‘might be able to do’ steps are also able to be accomplished when you break them down. After awhile, you can see that nothing is particularly impossible to achieve.

The only disappointed and disillusioned people are those who only dream and never take action.

Skyscrapers, Airplanes, Television, Moon Landings – all these were originally thought of as impossible. Yet they are now factual and many are common place. Any dream can be made into a reality by simply breaking down those goals into smaller, more doable steps and then taking action to get them done.

No matter what dreams you have for your life – if you keep them in front of you as a goal, and keep those doable steps listed out, as long as you plan your work and work your plan – then nothing is really impossible. Keep to this strategy and win!

Because your life could be a dream – if you really you want it to be.

US swimmer Phelps suspended over ‘pot pipe’

Friday, February 6, 2009

United States swimmer Michael Phelps has been banned from competition and his training stipend revoked for three months by USA Swimming after Phelps was photographed smoking from a glass pipe, often used for smoking cannabis. The picture was published last Sunday by British tabloid News of the World.

USA Swimming, which is the governing body of swimming in the United States, however said that no “anti-doping” rules had been violated.

“This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero,” it stated. “Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust.”

Should Phelps have been punished at all? If so, was the punishment strict enough?

The suspension will end in time for Phelps to train for the US Championships, which are to be held on the 7th of July.

Phelps has also lost sponsor Kellogg, who said that it would not renew its deal with the swimmer next month.

Phelps won a record eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing last year, and has since become one of the world’s most famous athletes.

New Jersey officials: Stimulus bill hurting Atlantic City casinos

Sunday, March 29, 2009

A New Jersey congressman says restrictions on federal stimulus money are hurting gaming destinations like Atlantic City, and he is seeking to repeal a provision banning the use of funds for casinos or other gaming establishments.

HAVE YOUR SAY
Is Ken Calemmo right to suggest that the gaming industry is as important as manufacturing, retail or finance?
Add or view comments

“The demonization of gaming destinations such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City for business travel is wrong, wrong, wrong,” U.S. Rep Frank LoBiondo said Friday during a press conference in front of Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The $787 billion federal stimulus bill passed in February specifically prohibits casinos from applying for funds for infrastructure improvements and other similar projects. LoBiondo said Atlantic City is losing millions of dollars in business as a result of that provision.

Casinos’ revenues dropped 19.2 percent in February 2009 month compared to February 2008, according to the New Jersey Casino Control Commission. LoBiondo said $160 million worth of business and 120,000 visitors have chosen other cities for their tourism plans due to the stimulus bill, according to Atlantic City Convention Center figures.

The administration also recently determined other groups like nonprofit organizations and local governments may not spend their stimulus money at casino properties. State officials said the rules are damaging a major pillar of the New Jersey economy.

“Are those jobs somehow less important or less meaningful than those in the manufacturing, retail or financial industries?” said Ken Calemmo, chairman-elect of the Greater Atlantic City Chamber.

Anti-gambling officials said the stimulus law does not prohibit casinos from taking advantage of tax breaks, and Atlantic City officials should not complain about the stimulus bill because the city is too reliant on an unreliable revenue stream.

“There isn’t a state, including New Jersey or Nevada, that could gamble themselves rich, any more than an individual could gamble themselves rich,” said Tom Grey, field director for StopPredatoryGambling.org. “They should’ve diversified (the economy) instead of chasing their loss.”

But Joe Kelly, chamber president, said 35,000 people work at New Jersey casinos, and thousands more around the state work for outside vendors that depend on casinos for their business.

“It is not just an Atlantic County issue. It is not just a Cape May issue,” Kelly said. “There’s purchasing done by every county.”

LoBiondo is working to repeal the provision with U.S. Rep Shelly Berkley, co-chair of the Congressional Gaming Cascus, and has reached out to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who has a history of representing the interests of the gaming industry.
