Belgrade hospital refuses to return baby to mother

Saturday, February 10, 2007

The Belgrade Neonatology Institute has refused to hand over a child to her mother, after she was unable to pay her medical bills.

Macedonian Senija Roganovic, who has no health insurance of any kind and cannot come up with the money for the bill, gave birth to the baby two months ago at and owes US$8,290.91 in hospital bills.

20-year old Roganovic has been sedated for the past two months and has lost 30 pounds of weight, possibly due to anxiety over what might happen to her child. During this period the hospital only let her see the baby once and she was not allowed to breast-feed her son.

On the 7th of February, Roganovic told her story to a journalist from the daily paper Kurir. After media reports the following day, the hospital finally let the baby go yesterday.

After testing positive for marijuana amid the latest drug test, former NFL star Michael Vick was placed under tighter restrictions by U.S. District Judge Henry Hudson.

Vick must be home between between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and he must submit to random drug tests that will be conducted in the future.

Hudson also ordered that Vick may have to attend and pay for inpatient or outpatient substance therapy and mental health counseling if a supervising officer deems so.

A document filed in U.S. District Court today said Vick tested positive amid a urine sample that was submitted on September 13, 2007.

Ft. Wayne, Indiana burn center treats Afghan child

Tuesday, July 12, 2005

Doctors at the regional burn center at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana are treating a patient flown in from war-torn Afghanistan.

U.S. Army’s 113th Battalion, which is made up of Indiana National Guardsman, discovered five-year-old Zia after a propane explosion in suburban Kabul] earlier this year destroyed homes and killed six of the boy’s family members.

The blast left Zia with third degree burns on his arms, torso and legs. Guardsmen, familiar with the Fort Wayne burn center, worked with non-profit group, Northeast Indiana Burn Council to raised $18,500 to fly Zia, accompanied by his father Abdul Qahir, to Fort Wayne for treatment.

Upon arrival, he was rushed to the St. Joseph burn unit, where after a few days of recovery fromtravel, underwent his first surgery June 23. The second and final surgery was postponed ninedays from an original date of July 2 because the boy developed an infection in one of his wounds, which is common for burn patients.

The second surgery grafted skin onto burn wounds on Zia’s arm, chest and the second toe on hisright foot. Tuesday, doctors said Zia was recovering and appeared to be in good spirits. Inpreparation for their planned return trip to Afghanistan in September, doctors are teaching Zia’sfather physical therapy techniques needed for further recovery. “Without good therapy, he couldbe right back where we started,” Dr. John Mancoll, the lead surgeon on the case, said in aninterview with the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette newspaper.

Story Of The Amazing 1000 Count Sheets}

Story Of The Amazing 1000 Count Sheets

by

Ernest T. PetersonI just bought a fantastically thick featherbed for my king sized mattress. While I love the item, I’m afraid that I wasted my money because I can’t fit my 1000 count sheets over the thing. To be honest, between the featherbed and the sheets, I’ll take the 1000 thread count sheets any day.

Insomnia is a huge problem for me and my husband. He has trouble sleeping at night because I have insomnia. My husband has the residual effects of my tossing and turning all night. The featherbed was ordered to help me get some rest but in the meantime my sister bought me 1000 count sheets for the bed.

The first night that I slept on the 1000 count sheets I was amazed. I can’t remember being so relaxed and comfortable in my life. I was still excited about the pending featherbed but I was really satisfied with the 1000 thread count sheet set. Nothing beats a good night’s sleep.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_l3iHOQZ38k[/youtube]

When the featherbed arrived I was happy to see that it was in beautiful shape and so crisp and clean. I laid the thick mattress pad on the king size bed only to begin feeling a little apprehensive about my 1000 count sheets. There was no way I could fit the fitted sheet over the thick pad.

This doesn’t mean that I didn’t try. I’m glad no one was in the room to witness my struggle with the massive feather bed but I was determined to have my 1000 count sheets any way that I could. That turned out to be under the mattress pad instead of on top where they belong. I tried to sleep on the new bedding but I really missed the 1000 thread count sheet set that I had grow used to. After a restless night I decided to put the featherbed away so I could sleep peacefully.

I hated to waste the money that I spent on the thick mattress pad so I thought that I would offer it to my thoughtful sister. She snorted and said that there was no way she could fit her sheets over the feather bed. She just didn’t want bothered with the thing.

I guess that a featherbed is great for someone who can’t get a good night’s sleep on occasion. A person who has insomnia

is better off with nice 1000 count sheets. There is no way I’m sleeping without them.

Report blames pilot error for Garuda Indonesia Flight 200 disaster

Monday, October 22, 2007

A final report released today has found pilot error to be the cause of the crash of Garuda Indonesia Flight 200 in Indonesia on March 7, 2007. 21 people were killed when the Boeing 737 airliner, carrying 140 people, overshot the runway at Adisucipto International Airport, near Yogyakarta. It crossed a road and then struck an embankment, bursting into flames, before stopping in a rice field, some 252m from the end of the runway.

The pilot is found to have been singing as he began the final descent, in direct contradiction to the Garuda Basic Operations Manual, which calls for activation of the Sterile Cockpit Rule at 10,000 feet and below.

The pilot was probably emotionally aroused because his conscious awareness moved from the relaxed mode “singing” to the heightened stressfulness of the desire to reach the runway by making an excessively steep and fast, unstabilised approach,” the report continued. However, it does say that he was fully aware that something was wrong during the approach, as he is recorded as having said “Oh, there is something not right.”

The report found that that the aircraft was flown by the pilot in command at a speed far exceeding that at which the wing flaps were able to operate properly. The report continues to criticise the pilot further, saying that a cockpit alert by the Ground Proximity Warning System informing the pilot he was flying too fast sounded no less than 15 times, but the pilot failed to abort the landing. He also ignored the co-pilot telling him to execute a ‘go-around procedure‘ after the aircraft struck the runway at speed and bounced back into the air.

The co-pilot is himself found to be at error by the report, which points out that he should have taken over the controls from the pilot when it became clear the aircraft was being flown in a dangerous manner. However, the report did note that Garuda Indonesia had failed to give him any simulator training replicating a situation whereby the co-pilot would take over control duties from the pilot in charge due to unsafe handling of the plane; in fact, training was found to be inadequate for both members of the cockpit crew.

In the report’s own words: “During the approach, the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) alerts and warnings sounded 15 times, and the copilot called for the pilot in command to go around.

“The aircraft was flown at an excessive air speed and steep flight path angle during the approach and landing, resulting in an unstabilised approach.

“The pilot in command did not follow company procedures that required him to fly a stabilised approach, and he did not abort the landing and go around when the approach was not stabilised.

“His attention was fixated or channelised on landing the aircraft on the runway and he either did not hear, or disregarded the GPWS alerts, and warnings, and calls from the copilot to go around.”

Authorities were also found to be at fault, with the Indonesian Director General of Civil Aviation criticised for failing to identify inadequacies in pilot training procedures. he was also criticised for the fact that the aircraft had managed to go virtually un-inspected, with only two safety checks in a decade.

The report adds that the Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting facilities at the airport were also lacking on the day of the accident, for struggling to access the crash site and for not having the appropriate fire suppressant upon their eventual arrival. The report says these delays likely had an impact on the survivability factors on board the plane in the moments after crashing, when the aircraft was in flames. It ultimately took more than two hours before the fire was put out. Another criticism leveled at the airport was that it failed to comply with international runway safety regulations.

The report has triggered a call from Caroline Mellish, sister of Australian Financial Review Morgan Mellish, one of five Australians killed in the accident, for greater co-operation between different Indonesian authorities. “I think not working together as different departments in a government shows a lack of any sort of system,” She said from Jakarta, to which she had travelled for the release of the final report.

“If they can’t work together in different departments, I don’t know how they are going to run a country and make any difference investigating this sort of accident and ensuring the recommendations do get carried forward to ensure that no more accident happen.”

However, she did have some sympathy to spare for the pilot who was in control of the plane that day when the possibility of his prosecution was raised: “I think having 21 deaths on your conscience is probably enough. I don’t think prosecuting the man is going to make any difference.”

National Transport Safety Committee chairman Tatang Kurniadi said that no information from the report would be used in any criminal or civil liability investigations. “I would like to go back to the objective of this, the report was made by NTSC for safety purposes only, not for blaming, he said.

“If any institution wants to … follow up that accident, that’s their own decision.

“The report contained the results from the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, but according to international regulations on aviation these black boxes are not allowed to be used for… liability purposes.

“We will not give police or any institution (information) other than for safety purposes only – it’s in international regulations and we want to follow those regulations.

What Do In Home Nursing Facilities Offer?

Professional care for convalescents and palliative care for the aged is a genuine concern for most of us. Busy work and life schedules do not leave us the time to take care of our dependent and aging relatives or those convalescing from some illness, injury or operation. Your loved ones might be too proud to look for care at hospices and nursing homes as they prefer the independence and security of living in the familiar environs of their homes. But they might be at constant risk of further complicating an existing illness or causing bodily harm to themselves unless they are under professional care. The major causes for geriatric care are when the elderly become mentally impaired and suffer memory loss. Elderly individuals face immobility, instability and incontinence with advancing age. Impaired vision and hearing loss is another cause for concern as they are no longer able to carry on conversations on the phone or are in danger of tripping and falling with failing vision. Living alone may leave them feeling independent, but older people do suffer from depression and social isolation if they cannot interact with others on a regular basis. If your loved one is incapacitated by illness, accident or age related conditions, you might consider the option of employing in home nursing facilities. In home nursing offers a wide range of care options. The care might range from short term respite care to professional nursing for long term debilitating illnesses or assisting convalescence after an operation. Medium dependency: When clients need help in taking care of their personal hygiene needs, i.e. require assisted bathing, dressing, toileting, mobility and assistance for normal household chores around the house.3. Caloundra defeat Wynnum in fourth round of 2020 Sunshine Coast Rugby Union season

Tuesday, August 25, 2020

Caloundra defeated Wynnum 45 points to 24 in their Round 4 Sunshine Coast Rugby Union match at Wynnum’s Grenada Street ground on Saturday.

“It’s a better performance than what we put on last week”, Wynnum coach Matt Myers said. “We’re a forty or fifty minute team at the moment, not an eighty minute team. [Just need to] stay in the fight and take [games] a bit deeper.” Caloundra opened the game with two tries before Wynnum hit back with a couple of tries of their own. “We were able to turn the momentum around after their first two”, Myers said. “They had it all over us in the first fifteen or so and we turned the momentum around.”

Caloundra half back Jarrod Kidston enjoyed the win. “Yeah it was a good start from us, probably the best start from us in a while”, Kidston said. “Then we just made a couple of mistakes and let them back in the game. They’re a good outfit so they put points on pretty quick.”

The visitors would run away with the result in the end. “We got back on even and managed to go try for try for a couple”, Myers said. “[We] let them [have the] momentum [and they were] over the top, they got a roll on”.

Fitness was a big factor in that according to Kidston. “We’ve been working hard on our fitness so it was pretty good to get the points at the back end”, he said.

In other results, Maroochydore defeated Caboolture 43–5, and University knocked of Noosa 32–22

Blu-ray prevails in high definition disc war

Wednesday, February 20, 2008

The battle between the two high definition optical disc formats, Blu-ray and HD DVD has ended after sole HD DVD manufacturer Toshiba has announced it will no longer produce HD DVD players.

In a press conference yesterday, Toshiba president Atsutoshi Nishida announced and confirmed that Toshiba will terminate the R&D plan on HD-DVD products. The key issue to force Toshiba terminating their HD-DVD R&D plan was Warner Bros., who changed their R&D plan from HD-DVD to Blu-ray on January 4.

In what is a reverse of the VHS vs Betamax format war, Sony‘s Blu-ray has come out on top with the backing of major studios and retailers such as Warner Bros. but also Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Netflix, and Blockbuster who announced they would only support Blu-ray exclusively this past month.

Even though Toshiba is currently about to change their R&D plan from HD-DVD to NAND flash drives and micro drives and plan to build two factories in Iwate, Japan, the company will provide the maintenance service on discs and players in the future 8 years.

Sony bundled Blu-ray into their PlayStation 3 game system. Microsoft’s competing Xbox 360, comes with a $200 HD DVD add-on player, whose fate is now undetermined with the demise of HD DVD. Microsoft has said they will wait for what Toshiba has to say.
