David Witt, father-in-law of Floyd Landis, commits suicide

Thursday, August 17, 2006

David Witt, father-in-law of Floyd Landis, the winner of the 2006 Tour De France, has died. Witt was found dead in his car in a parking garage on August 16. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, San Diego Police said. He was 57.

Witt who was married to Rose, the mother of Amber, Floyd Landis’ wife, introduced Amber to Landis. Witt was an amateur cyclist who became friends with Landis after having the same coach. At one time, they were even roommates.

Witt and his wife co-own the “Hawthorn’s” restaurant in San Diego and it is adorned with Landis memorabilia, including his jerseys and magazine covers. The two had also attended the Tour de France where they witnessed Floyd’s victory.

Floyd Landis did win the 2006 Tour de France, but the result is contested after he tested positive in a doping test. He is widely expected to be stripped of the title.

Get Money For Free With A Government Grant

By Bryan J Quinn

If you do a thorough research you’ll find out that there is a considerable amount of money available in the form of government grants. There are grants available covering almost every field you can imagine. Each government agency has its own procedures and requirements, that’s why you need to be informed before applying for government aid.

Different Alternatives

There are government grants available for individuals and for businesses. Government grants for individuals are mainly focused on the academic, research and artistic fields. But there are also Grants for organizations, businesses and non profit organizations too.

Student Grants

If you are looking for finance for college, there are many federal student loans and grants available. You’ll have to show that neither you nor your close family have enough income to support you in your way through college in order to be eligible for this kind of loan.

Scientific Investigation Grants

There are also government grants for research, if you are an advanced student or professional and you are doing research or plan to do research in a field the government is interested in, you might be able to obtain finance for the project. Most universities will be able to provide you details on this programs but you can also consult government agencies.

Business Grants

As regards to grants for businesses or non profit organization, the process is more complex. In any case you’ll need to prepare a business plan to present when you apply for a government grant. For non profit organizations there are many grants available as long as you can prove the public worthiness of the organization’s work. On the other hand, business grants are only offered for those firms that do business on certain fields which are of special interest for the government.

Either way you’ll need to sign on as an authorized organization representative in order to apply for a government grant in the name of a firm or a non profit organization and in some cases you’ll also need to register with the central contractor registry as a requirement to pursue the approval of a government grant.

Qualification

The requirements you’ll need to meet in order to get approved for a grant are variable. Each agency has its own requirements, the good news is that credit score is never one of them. You’ll need to contact the agency and request all the information related to the grant along with all the documentation you’ll need to fill in order to apply.

Do your research

Though it is the cheapest way, searching through all the government agencies websites for government grant offers is a very stressful job and won’t always throw good results. You can find many online sites offering all the information available on this subject, up-to-date and concise that will grant you access to all the documentation and will help you through the application process for a small fee.

Given that government grants don’t require repayment, they are probably the best source of finance. So if you are in need of money and you think you can qualify for a government grant, don’t hesitate to consider it as your first resort.

Stacey Moore

There could be good news for the more than 3 million Americans currently diagnosed with epilepsy and the millions more who may be someday.

Efforts to cure and raise awareness about the condition are getting a big boost from some big names. The disease is characterized by seizures; that is, a change in sensation, awareness or behavior brought about by a brief electrical disturbance in the brain. Seizures vary from a momentary disruption of the senses, to short periods of unconsciousness or staring spells, to convulsions.Doctors treat epilepsy primarily with seizure-preventing medicines. However, surgery, diet or electrical implants may also be used for treatment.Among the famous names who want to help are:• Amy Lee, the lead singer of the rock group Evanescence. She has a brother with epilepsy and she’s partnering with the Epilepsy Foundation in an “Out of the Shadows” campaign.• Senator John McCain. His father lived with seizures, a symptom of epilepsy, so now the senator is helping to further epilepsy awareness through public service announcements. • U.S. Women’s Ice Hockey goaltender and bronze medalist Chanda Gunn. Diagnosed with epilepsy when she was 9, Gunn helps teach others about the disease. • Alan Faneca, guard for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He has epilepsy and supports various epilepsy-related organizations. • Greg Grunberg. Best known for his television roles on “Felicity,” “Alias” and NBC’s new hit show “Heroes,” he’s national chair for the first-ever National Walk for Epilepsy, in support of his son. “It is such an honor to participate in any way we can to raise awareness in the fight against epilepsy,” Grunberg said. “To be able to march on Washington with those directly affected and their families lets our family know we are not alone.” The National Walk for Epilepsy takes place on March 31, 2007 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It is expected to draw 5,000 walkers and raise $1 million to support programs to eliminate stigma and raise awareness of epilepsy. • You. Anyone can join these celebrities and many others by supporting epilepsy research.

See www.OutoftheShadows.com.

Visit www.WalkforEpilepsy.org for details about the fundraiser or EpilepsyFoundation.org for patient and caregiver information. Greg Grunberg of the new hit show “Heroes” is trying to raise money for epilepsy research.

PETA protests Burberry in White Plains, NY

Wednesday, July 11, 2007

Today, at 12:00 p.m. EDT (UTC-4) the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) staged a “naked” protest in White Plains, New York. The target of the protest was British fashion house, Burberry, and their fur practices.

Two “naked” female PETA members, wearing nothing but bikini bottoms and body paint held billboards with the slogan, “When plaid goes bad.” The body paint was done in the trademarked Burberry Check plaid design.

Two other PETA members were there handing out leaflets and showing a video presentation. The painted protesters were spattered with far less fake blood than other documented PETA protests in this campaign.

PETA is protesting Burberry for the company’s use of fur in its products and how it is obtained. The group has staged similar protests around the world in its ongoing “BloodyBurberry”-campaign.

The protest took place at the intersection of Westchester Avenue and Bloomingdale Road in front of the The Westchester, an upscale shopping mall owned by Simon Property Group. Burberry has a retail store in the mall.

This corner is far from the mall’s entrances and sees little pedestrian traffic. However, it does see heavy traffic by motorists, before whom the protestors were in plain sight. While Wikinews was on the scene, police and news media were the only other pedestrians.

The police presence was significant, numbering at least two vehicles and two mounted police officers. But since there was no crowd to control, they just hung back. Media was also there in numbers. At least two television crews could be observed.

As far as Wikinews can tell, Burberry has yet to make any public comment about any of the “BloodyBurberry” protests.

Tuesday, December 8, 2009

State media reported earlier today that a stampede in a school in China has killed at least eight people and injured an additional 26.

The accident occurred at 21:10 local time at the Yucai Middle School, a privately-run institution in city of Xiangxiang, located in the Hunan Province. Reports say that several students were leaving their studies when one fell down a staircase, causing others to lose their balance and tumble down as well.

Those hurt in the incident were treated at three hospitals in the town, and eight other students were being observed by medical personnel despite appearing not to have been hurt.

Chinese officials are investigating the incident and have been questioning the city educational bureau and local school authorities, according to the Xinhua news agency.
