Wikinews interviews Canadian Paralympic skier Vanessa Knight

Thursday, December 20, 2012

Recently, Wikinews spent time with with Canadian Paralympic skier Vanessa Knight who was at Copper Mountain, Colorado for the IPC Nor-Am Cup.

((Wikinews)) We’re interviewing Vanessa Knight, who’s from Canada.

Vanessa Knight: That’s right!

((WN)) And what kind of skier are you?

Vanessa Knight: I am a disabled racer. I have a left arm amputation and I’m a speed skier.

((WN)) So you’re one of the standing skiers.

Vanessa Knight: Yes.

((WN)) I’ve been asking a lot of Paralympic disability skiers, what is the craziest skier of the slope? The standing ones, the blind ones, or the mono skiers?

Vanessa Knight: Oh my God, the blind ones for sure. I couldn’t imagine throwing myself down a hill without seeing anything. Especially the B1s. They have duct tape on their goggles.

((WN)) Where from Canada are you from?

Vanessa Knight: I’m from Quebec. Montreal.

((WN)) And how long have you been skiing?

Vanessa Knight: I’ve just entered my fourth year.

((WN)) And are you going to Sochi?

Vanessa Knight: I hope so!

((WN)) Are you going to beat… oh! Australia doesn’t have any skiers for you to beat. Do you think the level of competition for women’s disability skiing is high enough to give the sport a future?

Vanessa Knight: I think the level of competition is high enough, yes. But I still think we need more racers and people to get involved and really promote the sport, because, I mean, the more the merrier, right?

((WN)) Why are there so many men in skiing compared to women?

Vanessa Knight: I guess some girls are just scared and they don’t want to throw themselves out there. But I’m not like that and neither are the rest of the girls here. They’re not afraid to throw themselves down a hill and go fast.

((WN)) Do you think skiers are some of the craziest Paralympic athletes?

Vanessa Knight: Oh definitely.

((WN)) Is there anything you want to say about disability skiing in Canada that people in Australia or the world should know?

Vanessa Knight: Pretty much to say: It’s really cold in Canada. And we love it!

The Pros And Cons Of Doggy Daycare In Odenton

byAlma Abell

When you have a doggie for the first time, you quickly learn that you there is more to taking care of that doggie than just feeding it. Many people will look at you like you are insane if you mention the Doggie daycare in Odenton to them or any doggie daycare at all really. Dogs are not to be put in daycares; they are not children and can behave and be fine just fine by themselves for a few hours a day.

There are some pet parents that simply do not believe that however and tough the Doggie daycare in Odenton and everywhere else is relatively new, you can be sure there are plenty of pet parents out there that get their dogs up and ready to go to daycare in the mornings on their way to work.

Of course, as with any other type of daycare there are pros and cons to this kind as well. Read on for a few of the pros and cons of the doggie daycares in your area.

Pros of Doggie Daycares

* The fact that your dog doesn’t have to stay in a lonely house all day long is one of the main reasons that people put their dogs in daycare. You would not want to be stuck in a house all day long with no one to talk too and your puppy doesn’t appreciate it either.

* Safety is also a major concern for pet owners. If there is a fire, you pet lacks the skills to get out of the home. If the pet is safe in daycare then you don’t have to worry about it.

* Wear and tear on your home is another good reason for doggie daycare. Pets that are left alone tend to get into trouble. You can save a lot of tear on your furniture by putting Fido in daycare when you are gone.

Cons of Doggie Daycares

* The only real cons seems to be the fact that some dogs get overly stimulated and are hard to calm down when they get home.

Doggie daycares have become an option that many pet owners are exploring these days. For more information, visit GambrillsVeterinaryCenter.com today.

Cleveland, Ohio clinic performs US’s first face transplant

Thursday, December 18, 2008

A team of eight transplant surgeons in Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, led by reconstructive surgeon Dr. Maria Siemionow, age 58, have successfully performed the first almost total face transplant in the US, and the fourth globally, on a woman so horribly disfigured due to trauma, that cost her an eye. Two weeks ago Dr. Siemionow, in a 23-hour marathon surgery, replaced 80 percent of her face, by transplanting or grafting bone, nerve, blood vessels, muscles and skin harvested from a female donor’s cadaver.

The Clinic surgeons, in Wednesday’s news conference, described the details of the transplant but upon request, the team did not publish her name, age and cause of injury nor the donor’s identity. The patient’s family desired the reason for her transplant to remain confidential. The Los Angeles Times reported that the patient “had no upper jaw, nose, cheeks or lower eyelids and was unable to eat, talk, smile, smell or breathe on her own.” The clinic’s dermatology and plastic surgery chair, Francis Papay, described the nine hours phase of the procedure: “We transferred the skin, all the facial muscles in the upper face and mid-face, the upper lip, all of the nose, most of the sinuses around the nose, the upper jaw including the teeth, the facial nerve.” Thereafter, another team spent three hours sewing the woman’s blood vessels to that of the donor’s face to restore blood circulation, making the graft a success.

The New York Times reported that “three partial face transplants have been performed since 2005, two in France and one in China, all using facial tissue from a dead donor with permission from their families.” “Only the forehead, upper eyelids, lower lip, lower teeth and jaw are hers, the rest of her face comes from a cadaver; she could not eat on her own or breathe without a hole in her windpipe. About 77 square inches of tissue were transplanted from the donor,” it further described the details of the medical marvel. The patient, however, must take lifetime immunosuppressive drugs, also called antirejection drugs, which do not guarantee success. The transplant team said that in case of failure, it would replace the part with a skin graft taken from her own body.

Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, a Brigham and Women’s Hospital surgeon praised the recent medical development. “There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Leading bioethicist Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania withheld judgment on the Cleveland transplant amid grave concerns on the post-operation results. “The biggest ethical problem is dealing with failure — if your face rejects. It would be a living hell. If your face is falling off and you can’t eat and you can’t breathe and you’re suffering in a terrible manner that can’t be reversed, you need to put on the table assistance in dying. There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Dr Alex Clarke, of the Royal Free Hospital had praised the Clinic for its contribution to medicine. “It is a real step forward for people who have severe disfigurement and this operation has been done by a team who have really prepared and worked towards this for a number of years. These transplants have proven that the technical difficulties can be overcome and psychologically the patients are doing well. They have all have reacted positively and have begun to do things they were not able to before. All the things people thought were barriers to this kind of operations have been overcome,” she said.

The first partial face transplant surgery on a living human was performed on Isabelle Dinoire on November 27 2005, when she was 38, by Professor Bernard Devauchelle, assisted by Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard in Amiens, France. Her Labrador dog mauled her in May 2005. A triangle of face tissue including the nose and mouth was taken from a brain-dead female donor and grafted onto the patient. Scientists elsewhere have performed scalp and ear transplants. However, the claim is the first for a mouth and nose transplant. Experts say the mouth and nose are the most difficult parts of the face to transplant.

In 2004, the same Cleveland Clinic, became the first institution to approve this surgery and test it on cadavers. In October 2006, surgeon Peter Butler at London‘s Royal Free Hospital in the UK was given permission by the NHS ethics board to carry out a full face transplant. His team will select four adult patients (children cannot be selected due to concerns over consent), with operations being carried out at six month intervals. In March 2008, the treatment of 30-year-old neurofibromatosis victim Pascal Coler of France ended after having received what his doctors call the worlds first successful full face transplant.

Ethical concerns, psychological impact, problems relating to immunosuppression and consequences of technical failure have prevented teams from performing face transplant operations in the past, even though it has been technically possible to carry out such procedures for years.

Mr Iain Hutchison, of Barts and the London Hospital, warned of several problems with face transplants, such as blood vessels in the donated tissue clotting and immunosuppressants failing or increasing the patient’s risk of cancer. He also pointed out ethical issues with the fact that the procedure requires a “beating heart donor”. The transplant is carried out while the donor is brain dead, but still alive by use of a ventilator.

According to Stephen Wigmore, chair of British Transplantation Society’s ethics committee, it is unknown to what extent facial expressions will function in the long term. He said that it is not certain whether a patient could be left worse off in the case of a face transplant failing.

Mr Michael Earley, a member of the Royal College of Surgeon‘s facial transplantation working party, commented that if successful, the transplant would be “a major breakthrough in facial reconstruction” and “a major step forward for the facially disfigured.”

In Wednesday’s conference, Siemionow said “we know that there are so many patients there in their homes where they are hiding from society because they are afraid to walk to the grocery stores, they are afraid to go the the street.” “Our patient was called names and was humiliated. We very much hope that for this very special group of patients there is a hope that someday they will be able to go comfortably from their houses and enjoy the things we take for granted,” she added.

In response to the medical breakthrough, a British medical group led by Royal Free Hospital’s lead surgeon Dr Peter Butler, said they will finish the world’s first full face transplant within a year. “We hope to make an announcement about a full-face operation in the next 12 months. This latest operation shows how facial transplantation can help a particular group of the most severely facially injured people. These are people who would otherwise live a terrible twilight life, shut away from public gaze,” he said.

Airbus wins Qatar Airways order worth $15bn

Monday, June 13, 2005

European aircraft manufacturer, Airbus, has won an order from Qatar Airways for up to 60 of its new mid-sized A350 jets. The order, which is believed to be worth $15 billion, has given a boost to an otherwise disappointing Paris Air Show, which had been dominated by a state aid dispute between Airbus and Boeing.

Qatar Airways, which choose the Airbus A350 over Boeing’s 787, will also purchase 20 of Boeing’s larger 777 planes for $4.6 billion. Qatar has a previous order for 2 of Airbus’ massive new A380’s which it will begin to fly in 2009 out of London Heathrow.

In 2004, Airbus sold more planes than Boeing for the first time ever, sparking questions whether the US company had lost its once seemingly impregnable grip on the aviation market. However thus far, Boeing has received far more orders than Airbus in 2005.

The Rise Of Gastric Bypass Surgery Malpractice

The Rise of Gastric Bypass Surgery Malpractice

by

Los Angeles Medical Malpractice Lawyer

By doing so, the stomach pouch becomes too small to hold large amounts of food and the body absorbs less dietary fat because the food skips the duodenum. The popularity of this surgery has swelled to reach over 140,000 surgeries every year because of the rising obesity rates in our nation and the rise in the number of surgeons willing to perform gastric bypass surgery. In order to qualify for gastric bypass surgery, an individual must be one hundred pounds or more overweight and have gone through several other weight-loss procedures. Unlike other surgical procedures, a patient will usually decide that he or she wants gastric bypass surgery and then they will try to find a surgeon to do the operation.

Many surgeons advertise their ability to perform gastric bypass surgeries through forms of advertisement such as websites, brochures and speaking at seminars. It has become known as somewhat of a miracle prescription for quick and massive weight loss, but not everyone who wants gastric bypass surgery is a qualified candidate for this complex operation. This surgery is technically difficult and complex, and candidates cannot have any other medical conditions.

Back in 1987, less than 14,000 gastric bypass surgeries were performed on a steady basis. Because of the rapidly increasing popularity and the growth in kinds of gastric bypass surgeries, researchers suggest that there has also been a growing risk of inexperienced surgeons. To keep up with the high demand for these procedures, some surgeons have started performing gastric bypass surgeries without enough experience. Research shows that patients of surgeons who have performed less than 70-100 operations experience more complications, including death, than patients operated on by an experienced surgeon.

Some of the most common implications of gastric bypass surgeries include bleeding or leakage of gastric fluid and pulmonary embolism. It is vitally important that a doctor diagnoses and treats the leakage of gastric fluid or bleeding into the abdominal cavity in a timely manner. Without a swift and proper diagnosis, the patient could be at risk for serious injury or wrongful death. While the likeliness of suffering bleeding or leakage is the highest, the possibility of death is much higher for pulmonary embolisms. Pulmonary embolisms can occur during or after the surgery, and this term refers to the blockage of the pulmonary artery caused by a detached, free-floating blood clot that traveled through the bloodstream.

With all of the different types of gastric bypass surgeries available today (Silastic Ring Vertical, Open Roux-en-Y, Biliopancreatic Diversion, Gastric Band, Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band, etc) it is more important than ever to make sure your surgeon is highly experienced. If you or someone you love has suffered

gastric bypass malpractice

because of the inexperience of the surgeon or a failure to diagnosis problems resulting from the surgery, call a

immediately. In some situations, you may be able to file a lawsuit because you were not a qualified candidate for gastric bypass surgery. Whatever the cause may be, you must take legal action to protect your rights and seek justice and compensation for your injuries.

When you are suffering from medical malpractice, you need a legal advocate who will fight tirelessly to defend your rights and seek justice on your behalf. Los Angeles medical malpractice attorney Steven J. Weinberg has an impressive record of fighting for the rights of injured patients in a variety of medical malpractice cases, and he can defend you. He has recovered millions of dollars in judgments, settlements and verdicts throughout his years in practice, and he can help you.

David Witt, father-in-law of Floyd Landis, commits suicide

Thursday, August 17, 2006

David Witt, father-in-law of Floyd Landis, the winner of the 2006 Tour De France, has died. Witt was found dead in his car in a parking garage on August 16. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, San Diego Police said. He was 57.

Witt who was married to Rose, the mother of Amber, Floyd Landis’ wife, introduced Amber to Landis. Witt was an amateur cyclist who became friends with Landis after having the same coach. At one time, they were even roommates.

Witt and his wife co-own the “Hawthorn’s” restaurant in San Diego and it is adorned with Landis memorabilia, including his jerseys and magazine covers. The two had also attended the Tour de France where they witnessed Floyd’s victory.

Floyd Landis did win the 2006 Tour de France, but the result is contested after he tested positive in a doping test. He is widely expected to be stripped of the title.

Dog’s throat cut in Cairns, Australia

Thursday, July 15, 2010

In what the RSPCA calls a “horrific” case of animal cruelty, a dog’s jaw was taped shut, and its throat cut, in Cairns, Australia.

The Staffordshire mix, who was found by police in a critical condition last Thursday, was reportedly struggling to breath and bleeding heavily due to her throat being slashed and her muzzle being bound.

“The way they cut was almost down to the larynx, so muscles were cut but luckily they missed the jugular veins,” said Sarah Gill, the vet who stitched the 10 cm long, 3 cm deep cut.

In a statement reported on Tuesday, Inspector Cameron Buswell, a law enforcement officer with the RSPCA animal welfare charity, said it is hard to comprehend that there are people in the community capable of this level of cruelty.

“This would have to be up there as one of the more horrific cases we’ve dealt with […]The poor dog must have been petrified. How she didn’t die is miraculous.” he said.

Named ‘Franky’ by rescuers, the dog is progressing well along her road to recovery, has a warm, loving and kind nature, and has begun to come out of her shell, Buswell said.

“She is a really nice natured animal and she loves being with people.”

This has become apart of string of violent attacks on pets in Queensland. Another dog in North Queensland named ‘Boof’ was beaten and left to die with a 30 kg chain around his neck in January. In May, a family dog in Toowoomba had its throat slit and a rubber band placed around the wound, twice.

The RSPCA is appealing for information from the public regarding the person or persons responsible for the latest attack.

6 Simple Steps To Create An Outstanding Diy Hot Stones Massage Kit

By Chris Turley

Are you a DIY fan? That acronym stands for Do It Yourself. Survival in the current soft economy means that we must sometimes tighten our belt, in order to make ends meet. One of the best cost-saving strategies we can use is to find some DIY projects to save a few bucks here and there. Not only can such projects save us some greenbacks, but they can be a barrel of fun as well! Here are some easy steps to create your own hot stone massage kit:

Step 1: Visit your friendly neighborhood rock quarry or landscape company

These are excellent sources for river rocks, which are ideal for hot stone massage kits. The drawback of using such stones is that they are less attractive and symmetrical than the ones in hot stones massage kits on the market. However, in this case, it is okay to place function over form. Remember that you are not entering the stones in a beauty pageant!

Step 2: Choose your stones and choose them carefully

Select stones that are flat and relatively smooth. The flatness of the stones will help to maximize the surface area that they cover on a patients body. Also, this feature will reduce the stones probability of rolling off! Meanwhile, smooth stones will provide a more comfortable experience for the massage patient. Make sure to secure the following quantity and types of stones:

2 Huge oval stones (8 in. x 6 in.)

7 pairs of rocks you can easily grip in your hands

8 tiny stones ranging from a quarters size, to a chicken eggs size

Step 3: Purchase a 6-quart crockpot

While you have many options for heating the stones, a crockpot is the best option if you want to continue with your DIY approach to hot stone massages. An alternative would be a tabletop skillet, with sides that are a minimum of three inches in height.

Step 4: Collect your hot stone massage accessories

In addition to the stones and the crockpot, you will need various accessories, which are instrumental in providing an outstanding hot stone massage. These accessories include:

food thermometer

strainer

tea towels (2)

tongs

Step 5: Create your DIY massage kit for a hot stone massage

Set up the crockpot. Next, wash the rocks thoroughly and stack them up in the crockpot. This is a vital step, as the stones probably are grubby. Afterwards, place enough water in the crockpot, to cover the rocks thoroughly.

Step 6: Get ready to rock and rub

Plug in the crockpot and then heat the stones to 120-150 Fahrenheit. Use the tongs to remove the stones, the strainer to remove excess water, and the tea towels to hold the stones.

Today, many people are using DIY projects to cut their budgets. Creating a DIY hot stone massage kit is one such project. You can save a huge amount of dough, by gathering the items for the kit yourself. Give hot stone massages without taking out a second mortgage!

British Climatic Research Unit’s emails hacked

Thursday, November 19, 2009

Unknown individuals gained access to a server of University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU). As a result, around thirteen years of email correspondence between researchers is now available worldwide. Substantial previously unpublished climate change observations are included.

According to initial reports by TGIF Newspaper and the Watt’s Up With That blog, hundreds of emails and documents were made available from a FTP site on a Russian server with an accompanying statement:

“We feel that climate science is, in the current situation, too important to be kept under wraps. We hereby release a random selection of correspondence, code, and documents”

Some journalists suppose that this event is a consequence of increased attention on CRU after it played a substantial role in the IPCC fourth assessment report (2007).

The released data is a 62 megabyte zip file, containing around 160 megabytes of emails, pdfs and other documents. Some of the contents have been confirmed as genuine by the head of the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit, Dr Phillip Jones. In an interview with TGIF Newspaper, he stated that a breach of security had taken place and that a large quantity of files had been “stolen”. The interviewer discussed one of Dr. Jones’ published e-mails:

Once Tim’s got a diagram here we’ll send that either later today or first thing tomorrow. I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd [sic] from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline. Mike’s series got the annual land and marine values…

The interviewer asked Dr. Jones to explain the phrase “hide and decline”, but he answered that he had no idea what he meant by using them (as they were made in the context of a discussion taking place 10 years ago), and he had not attempt to mislead:

No, that’s completely wrong. In the sense that they’re talking about two different things here. They’re talking about the instrumental data which is unaltered – but they’re talking about proxy data going further back in time, a thousand years, and it’s just about how you add on the last few years, because when you get proxy data you sample things like tree rings and ice cores, and they don’t always have the last few years. So one way is to add on the instrumental data for the last few years.

In a press release by the University of East Anglia, Dr. Jones stated that:

“That the world is warming is based on a range of sources: not only temperature records but other indicators such as sea level rise, glacier retreat and less Arctic sea ice.
“Our global temperature series tallies with those of other, completely independent, groups of scientists working for NASA and the National Climate Data Center in the United States, among others. Even if you were to ignore our findings, theirs show the same results. The facts speak for themselves; there is no need for anyone to manipulate them.
“[…]My colleagues and I accept that some of the published emails do not read well. I regret any upset or confusion caused as a result. Some were clearly written in the heat of the moment, others use colloquialisms frequently used between close colleagues.”

One such colloquialism, “trick,” is frequently used by scientists and engineers to refer to an essential or non-obvious element in the solution of a problem, as opposed to the common political usage connoting deception.

Commentators argue that the published messages show the researchers’ reluctance to publish scientific material, though it contains serious global warming observations. Some of the correspondence portrays the scientists as feeling under siege by skeptics’ and worried that any stray comment or data glitch could be turned against them.

The East Anglia University has shut down the original server, from which the information was stolen. A university spokesman stated that data was published without permission, but did not confirm whether all of the published communication is genuine:

We are aware that information from a server used for research information in one area of the university has been made available on public websites.

Because of the volume of this information we cannot currently confirm that all of this material is genuine.

This information has been obtained and published without our permission and we took immediate action to remove the server in question from operation.

We are undertaking a thorough internal investigation and we have involved the police in this enquiry.

The release of the documents comes just weeks before a major climate-change summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, meant to lay the groundwork for a new global treaty to curb greenhouse-gas emissions and fight climate change.
